Composites

These composite images result from experiments that involve blending together two or more photographs in such a way as to achieve new and heightened thoughts and feelings. The final products are abstract, but organic chimera of the natural world.

Chimera

The first set of images in this collection are composites inspired by the concept of "Chimera" ; an organism containing a mixture of genetically different tissues, formed by processes such as fusion of early embryos, grafting, or mutation. The base image is a photograph of something in the natural world, like rocks, ripples in water, or tree bark, that supplies the underlying texture of the composite.  One or more overlaid photographs infuse the colors and shapes of natural objects and creatures, like flowers and butterflies, into the composite.  Adjusting the transparency of the overlaid images gives the impression that the objects they contain have melted or fused into the underlying, natural structure.  To learn more about this series, please check out this blog post.

Butterfly Composites

This collection of composites was originally inspired by a request from a client for a series of composites developed using a method similar to the one I used to create my original composite in this style, Light Leaks (visible under the "Flowers and Other Composites" collection below).  Here I experiment with methods of combining photographs of butterflies with an underlying image of trees, fields or flowers.  Most also have a series of treatments applied that mimic the look of the Light Leaks composite.

Flowers and Other Composites

This collection includes an additional series of composites featuring flowers modeled after the  original photograph, Light Leaks.   Again, created in part to satisfy the wishes of a client who wanted to purchase a series of composites of similar style and color.  I have also included some earlier work in composites at the bottom.  You can learn more about the evolution of my approach to compositing in photography by reading this blog post.
