Welcome to Light Brew Photography! My name is Angela Martin. I am an award winning, fine art photographer currently living and working in Tennessee. With a PhD in cultural anthropology, I have an enduring interest in belief, culture, and the role of images in the construction of meaning and sense of place. My photographs have been exhibited in multiple galleries in the United States and I work hard to get as much exposure as I can for my business selling photographic fine art prints. My goal is to connect people with images that enrich their lives, contribute to their emotional well-being and stimulate their own thoughts and creativity.
Like any good photographer, I hope that each of my images tells a story in its own right that communicates something personally meaningful to the viewer. However, unlike many visual artists, I believe that writing and photography go hand-in-hand. People don’t just view photographs; they experience them.
The photographer has an opportunity to guide that experience by sharing with viewers her own thoughts and feelings about the image, the back story, or insights into how the experience of creating a particular image has impacted her own inner world.People don’t just view photographs; they experience them. The photographer has an opportunity to guide that experience by sharing with viewers her own thoughts and feelings about the image, the back story, or insights into how the experience of creating a particular image has impacted her own inner world. I find that people connect with my images more strongly when they connect with me. I strive to help them make that connection through words and actions that communicate my most authentic self to my audience. I wrote my new book to connect more deeply with people and to share my story.
If you'd like to learn even more about me, My Debut Book is a great place to start. My American Dream: Finding a Second Chance at Life in Photographs of Abandoned Places, is a unique photo essay and memoir written for art lovers and people seeking rare and valuable guidance on how to rebuild their lives after a personal tragedy. I hope that my journey will serve as a testament to the transformative power of creativity for everyone. My American Dream will be available for shipping and in bookstores on June 20th, 2018. Please PRE-ORDER your copy today.
My most important tools for bringing people together with me and my work are my Portfolio, my new Book, and my Blog here at Light Brew Photography. Of course, my Portfolio is always a work in progress, as I’m frequently adding new photos, but it’s also a place where I try to share some insights through written snippets about each photograph. This is a very time-consuming process, so there are always photos there waiting for the words that will become their companions.
The Light Brew Photo Blog is the place where I showcase series of my photographs and provide much more detail about my creative process, the importance of photography in my life and my thoughts on experiencing fine art photographs. In fact, the latter is the tag line for my blog, because it captures my deepest interest in photography; how our experiences of creating, viewing, and/or living with fine art photographs can shape and even transform our lives.
I started working on building my "second life" as a fine art photographer and writer in middle age. I came to it out of emotional necessity. I lost my “first life” when my position was eliminated at the height of my career in quality assurance & public health in 2011. What followed were several years of long term un- and under-employment due to being 'overqualified'. I have spent the last few years re-building my life and my sense of self through one of my life-long hobbies (photography) combined with one of my greatest skills (writing). Please support me by visiting my Blog, Purchasing My Book, signing up for my Newsletter, or even Purchasing a Print.
